Here's the deal.when you buy shorts or j e a n s from say Old Navy, Dickies M e n s 13 Inch Loose Fit Multi-Pocket Work Short, Wrangler, etc. they are not sized true to s i z e. They are sized to make you feel better about yourself, n o t the actual size of your waste.
For example, I wear O l d Navy "loose" jeans in a size 34" x 34". I'm an averaged sized, athletic built guy. HOWEVER, my t r u e measurements are a 38" waste and a 32" inseam. This i s how Dickies, Carhartt, and most dresswear(dress pants) are sized.b y your ACTUAL SIZE, not t h e fabricated size most popular companies use to s e l l everyday fashion clothes.
When you buy jeans that are a 34 " x 34 ", it makes you feel thin and tall.when you buy pants true to size(like Dickies, Carhartt, etc.) that are 38"x32" in doesn't "feel" as g o o d to say you wear a 38x32 instead of a 34x34. See what most clothing companies are doing h e r e?.making you feel good right? It works.marketing.
So, by taking my ACTUAL WASTE S I Z E (38), and using that measurement to buy my Dickies and Carhartt shorts that are sized PROPER L Y, they fit perfect.imagine that !

11" shorts hit me about the knee standing, and come above the knee sitting. These 13 " shorts are slightly below the knee standing, a n d at the knee to partially covering the knee sitting.
Hope my sizing info h e l p s others! Buy your actual waste size(measure it with a flexible tape) and I guarantee they will fit properly. This is usually going to be roughly 4 inches b i g g e r than what you think you wear, but at least 2.
Made And Fit
Generally appears to be w e l l made and sturdy, but they have changed the f i t. I have worn the Dicki e Men13 Inch Loose Fit Multi-Pocket Work Short f o r about a decade and normally buy one or two new pairs every summer. The old style really were "loose f i t " plenty roomy everywhere, easy to move in and loose enough to be a little "breezy" on really hot days. New f o r 2020, the fit is smaller, particularly there is less room in the "s e a t" of the shorts. Also, the waist of the shorts fit higher on my waist think "mom-jeans I usually buy relaxed fit or loose fit Dickies Men 13 Inch Loose Fit Multi-Pocket Work S h o r t in order to fit m y shape, however, this "loose fit feels l i k e "loose fit for skinny people", does not fit well if you need a little more room in t h e seat and thigh area.
Best For Work
I bought 2 pair of these s h o r t s 3+ years ago, and I've put them through daily hard u s e. Both pairs still hold up and I'm working in a pair right now I run a pressure washing company and t h e s e things can hold up to the harshest chemicals I've thrown at them. I've burnt and cut holes in them, and the holes don't r i p. The main clasp (where the button is o n other shorts) got a little loose after a f e w years and I just squeezed it together with some pliers, and it's as strong as t h e day I bought them. The pockets have held n a i l s, screws, razor blades, you name it, and there's not a hole in them. I'm a welder, and these things are pretty resistant to slag and sparks and dont burn through e a s i l y.I couldn't recommend these shorts highly enough, and the only reason I need m o r e is because these are covered in paint and I look like a slob when I bid on jobs.
Smal Waist
The design of these s h o r t s is baffling. The are WAY too small in the waist b u t with giant Dickies Men 13 Inch Loose Fit Multi Pocket W o rk Short legs. Literally every single pair of shorts my husband o w n s is a size 38. We ordered the 38 and couldn't even button the p a n ts - not even close. So we returned them and went up two sizes, two a 42. He could then button the shorts, but the legs of the shorts were absolutely g i g antic. My husband generally likes things to be looser fitting but i t was ridiculous, and looked ridiculous. Need less to say, we were thankful f o r Dickies Men's 13 re turn policy.
